Can Birding help you chill, relax and unwind?
In short, of course it can. Often getting away and experiencing that which nature has to offer is and should be a prescribed recommendation from a doctor from time to time. Except for the heat right now, I can sit out there but moving and walking can be challenging if it’s not really early first thing in the morning. However, what I will do when it’s super hot, just to get away, is go “Car Birding”. Basically, I sit in the car, with the A/C, my camera, binoculars and water and I will get out for short walks, but never leave my car too far behind. This lets me go to the spots I want to see, without having to walk super long distances in the heat.

As for having a mental moment, I think that birding often provides a distraction, for me at least. I am super focused on the sounds I hear and the fucking bird I am trying to find, that all the “noise” in my brain takes a backseat for a while. There is nothing like trying to find a Painted Bunting, singing from a treetop with my bins. The feeling when it comes into focus while I’m dialed in, is always just a vibe. It exciting, even when I have seen one many times. It’s a cool bird. Or of course seeing an Anhinga. On my last trip to Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina, I took pictures and observed a male and female Anhinga swim and spear fish for about two hours. It was great. I forgot all my worries in that moment. I didn’t take pictures or video after a while and just remained present. LOVED IT!

How does birding help you mentally? Id love to know your take on things!
