Well, we have officially made the transition into winter. Soon my backyard and birding spots will be filed with sparrows, Yellow-Rumped Warblers and thrushes. My most frequent visitor is the White-Throated Sparrow. They are all fucking over the place. It gets so crazy in the winter that I’ll hear just them; come January, I will admit I am a little tried of seeing them, however the first sightings of them are always exciting! Their song is one of my favorites in the song bird community.

Baltimore Orioles
I am lucky to have had over the winter months a pair of Baltimore Orioles that have come back for three years now. Last year, they brought a young male with them. I am hoping they all return this year, or tell their fiends. I will keep you posted. If you don’t give a shit, that’s ok too. Normally these dudes like grape jelly, but for whatever reason they love the No mess No Millet seed from Wild Birds Unlimited. They will come to my platform feeders and just love the hell out of that seed.

Winter is ideal for Observation
I often take the time to during the winter to bush up on my listening and observation skills. Since birding is somewhat slower, there is less activity with the majority of our migration birds in their winter accommodations further down south, it’s easier to just notice things. One of the best things you can do to learn about birds, is to watch them. Often, I will go birding without my camera or just sit in my backyard with my binoculars and watch birds be birds. I will listen, observe behaviors, memorize sounds and enjoy the moments I have with a coffee in the morning.
