Let me just fly in here and tell you about a conversation I had with someone on my Instagram.

They messaged me and said: “Hey, you need to create a Discord.”
I replied “I already have a group of my own.”
He said: “yea well I don’t need to pay for stuff like that.”
I said:” well then, you don’t see the value in what I am doing. I spend my own time and money to make this group what it is. I also have giveaways, group meet-ups and we are planning a trip to Costa Rica soon.”
He said: “I am in Canada so I can’t meet-up with you. I have a group of people I meet up with in Discord.”
I then said: “That’s great, we have a member in Canada and we are looking for more.”
We left it at that, but the conversation got me thinking. Why the fuck did I start this group? What is the value? Why should people pay?
Why the Fuck did I start this group?
I started The Flock because there was a need for me to connect more closely with people that bird like me.
I wanted to share my enthusiasm, cuss and be excited about birds and nature without someone restricting my “Fowl Mouth” (pun intended).
In the group, we share wins! Have funny and informative conversations. There is an interactive map where you can see where other “Flockers” are located.
There is also a “Classroom” feature where we learn about different topics. We just had a professional photographer class with an expert. It was great. We recorded it and people in the group can view it at their leisure or some participated when it was “Live”.
We have weekly Zoom calls which are optional and something I look forward to every week!
In short, this shit is booming. I can’t wait to see its progress, and momentum.
What is the value?

I’ve asked myself this very question and I think it is different for everyone who has joined the group. Some people really enjoy having a nonjudgmental space where they can ask questions without being ridiculed, learn without having any embarrassment and get to know other people.
For myself, it was a collective need to find people like me. I often get criticized for cussing. I couldn’t believe some of the comments and inbox messages I received from other birders telling me to “tone down my language” “stop with the cussing” and the classic; “real birders don’t cuss.” WHAT THE FUCK!?
My mission to just connect with more people like me, who love birds and have that fire, so to speak, has been so much easier, with The Flock.
Why should people pay?

My dudes, this is one of the biggest questions I get and the most pushback. I’ll tell you why you SHOULD PAY and SHOULD want to PAY.
The first is going to be the obvious to me. People who pay, are there because they want to be. They want to participate, learn, have fun and are not going to come into the group/community with a negative objective.
Second, I put a lot of my own time, money and effort into making this work. I spend countless hours, so you don’t have to. I want it to be fun and engaging for you. No spam, no assholes and no fucking babies about you saying “fuck”. Cussing is in the group rules; it’s allowed.
I’m also planning trips. Our current trip is to Costa Rica in 2026 and we are working behind the scenes to make that amazing for “The Flockers”.
When I say “WE” I have someone who is running the group with me. Huge shout-out to my “number one” (that’s a Star Trek reference) Alayna. She gets on calls with new Flockers, answers questions, and is in touch with all of our members. She’s amazing and yes, I pay her.
Third, this community has no bounds. The platform which it is on is called SKOOL. The developers are amazing. They are right in line with how social media to me should be. I have no worries about the group being deleted or banned. I have total control over where this goes. They are 100 percent cheering for our success as a community and it’s encouraging. It is different than a social media platform. They just offer so much more.
Become a Flocker
IF you want to become a member of The Flock, you can! Right now, I offer a free seven day trial membership. If you don’t like it you can fuck off and leave. 🙂
But if you do, you can stick around and see what the community is all about, what it can do for you, and help you in your birding, learning and finding connections; like I have and many others are currently doing.
